Great shots, incredible facility especially considering the former abode (never
mind the Brooklyn "atmosphere").

Great coverage and congrats on the Grand Opening . . . nice to see your 'prized possessions' have a new home (and built so quickly too!)

I am surprised there are no skylights in the roof.

We put them in all our new buildings as they really help light up the space during the days.

Chris, what has become of 231?

Chris, great coverage, as usual. You are a fine photographer. Even caught me (at work?) standing around. How did the first weekend after this, open to the public go?

I LIKE it! Never visited the sacred Brooklyn St. Roundhouse, but I'm very impressed with this huge, brightly-lit building and space to work on the engines.... the old roundhouse looked cramped, dingy and dark from the photos I saw, and this is a nice, new building that hopefully will invite younger folks so necessary to sustain the 4449 for future generations... nice touch to name it after Doyle, too.

Excellent set of photos Chris!!!! One of our future phases (next??) is installation of the former
Brooklyn Roundhouse turntable with some display tracks. That is where I would like to see the 231
and 644 and other equipment located for display and public access. I would also include Chris McLarney's
beautifully restored UP caboose. Yes, we have limited space but the turntable and attached display
tracks would help solve this and give us the ability to display these and other important RR artifacts.

We continue to have a good visitor count....not the grand opening crowds but near 200 today (sunday).
Our open hours are Thursday through Sunday, 1 to 5 PM. With all that is going on in December, our
open hours during that month are under discussion.

We are still looking for more docents, if interested please PM me.

And don't forget to purchase a 2013 Friends of SP4449 calendar.......more neat work from Chris F.! Arlen

Is it or will it be needed to extend the rails out further from the engine house 4449 is sitting on in the pitcure with the crowed lined up to see her.

I couldn't be happier for the group or for Doyle.
For a shy withdrawn guy, he sure has accomplished some great things and has left a lot of things better than he found them. That's a good goal for everyone. If we could coax him out of his shell, who knows what he could do.

Another long-time volunteer termed it "The Orhf-anage".

I don't believe the rails will be extended much to the south before hitting the turntable as our property line is fixed at the now installed
fence and just beyond the fence will be the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail line opening 2015. Arlen.

For those of us not connected with this project, can someone please explain who Doyle is? Is he a local millionaire who does philanthropy? Is he a railroad person? Architect of the new building? Thanks.

Have you been hanging out with Rip Van Winkle?

No, I'm not kidding. How am I supposed to know who he is if I don't live in Oregon and don't hang out at this facility? For those of us "not in the know", oftentimes, buildings are named after people who have passed. This does not seem to be the case, thus, I'm just wondering who he is. Don't go all "foamy" on me just because I don't know who someone is.

You are obviously VERY young, and are unaware of the High Iron Company (restored & operated NKP 759) and the American Freedom Train Foundation (restored & operated 4449 for the nation wide tour of the American Freedom Train to celebrate the nation's bi-centennial in 1975/1976).

No mater your location OUTSIDE OF OREGON, I always thought that ANYBODY even remotely interested in railroading and trains in general, was aware of AFT/SP 4449 and the man responsible for her restoration/overhaul/maintenance/operation!

Maybe you could do a Google search on him?

OK, since you are serious, I can tell you a few facts. Doyle McCormack IS the reason we have SP4449 in operation today. From restoring her to run as the American Freedom Train, to operating her ever since, to maintaining her, to spearheading the effort to get a permanent home for all 3 Portland owned engines, Doyle has done it all! He is the MAN! Far from being an expert on everything "Doyle," I'll leave it to others with more knowledge to expound on the subject!

The building appears to be protected by a modern fire sprinkler system in the bar joists, so I imagine the fire marshal was pleased. The building design allows for clear floor space with minimal columns to get in the way. Very nice.
