D&RG T-12 #168: To Be Leased to The C&TS?
Author: jointlinerailfan

Hello folks this is the Joint Line Railfan.

I received word today that the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad has approached the city of Colorado Springs' Parks and Recreation department about a possible lease agreement with Denver and Rio Grand Western T-12 #168. This locomotive is currently on display in Antlers Park in downtown Colorado Springs, across the street from the former DRG depot and the Joint Line.
There will be a public meeting held tonight in downtown Colorado Springs over this possible lease agreement. For those in the area, we are all encouraged to attend the meeting, which will be at the Parks Administration Building, 1401 Recreation Way, at 6PM. This is a very excited prospect, and I hope that whatever decisions are made between the City and CATS will all add up to a successful future for this sweet little locomotive. Thanks for looking! And keep it steamin'.

Need both of them to double head the "historic cars" over the hill, as is the
168 might make Osier with four cars.

I was not aware what a "T-12" was, thanks for the link! What can C&TS do with a 4-6-0? With the steep mountain grades, arent the Mike's extra feet better?

It would be nice for variety's sake, though.

I don't know about what kind of freight it could pull, but per a friend, the Friends are restoring a mail car and are hoping to have a matching passenger car for a 2-car San Juan replica. I don't know much about D&RG narrow gauge (heck, the steam era in general!), so it may not even be the same era, but it's a possibility.

It be great to have an earlier engine for movie making. When I see an outside frame 2-8-2 in a movie with 19th Century setting, it just does not cut it!

Movie/TV work is fast becoming a way for tourist RRs and Museums to augment their incomes. The 168 might well be a way to get in on some of that coin, although I would think the 315 (and the EUREKA should she be returned to service) would also fill that bill quite nicely and probably could be leased as needed for far less than restoring the 168.

I suspect the primary reason for stabling an engine like 168 is for high-end photo charters, which can command big bucks and attract an international following.

Gerry, thanks for posting the photo.

Hopefully the lease details can be worked out as that is one fine looking locomotive.

The 168 would add some nice variety to the locomotive stable at C&TS.

The T-12 were the regular power on the D&RG(W) passenger trains over Marshall and Cumbres passes until the advent of heavier power in the 1920s. They were also used on the Chili Line from Antonito, CO. to Santa Fe until the 1930s when the train became a mixed. The Salida-Alamosa passenger train also had them until it was taken off in the 1920s.

I have very little hope for this. It seems to be a money pit. Not trying to burst bubbles here. Never know! i have heard it was rough shape boiler wise. Anyways. Hope them guys down there do it. Nice hearin' from ya Nick!

Just came to my mind. Why are they considering it now? They have two K-36s in need of 1472s and that is about 1 million a piece.

There are folks out there who could stretch a job like that out to a million-plus...
