Steam & Excursion > Chasing NKP 765 Ferry Move Last Month

Back on September 9 (2015) Nickel Plate Road made a long ferry move from Buffalo, New York, to Bellevue, Ohio, over the former NKP mainline, which is now owned by Norfolk Southern. A friend and I chased it between Westfield, New York, and Painesville, Ohio. Here is a selection of that chase. 

Photos 1, 2 and 3 show the train crossing the trestle over Chautauqua Creek in Westfield. It was overcast and had been raining in Westfield before the NKP 765 arrived.

Photo 4: Putting out steam and smoke at Gulf Road near North East, Pennsylvania. There is a trestle here, but we couldn't get to the location in time to make the short walk down to the bridge. We settled for shooting by the grade crossing.

Photo 5: Crossing Conneaut Creek in Conneaut, Ohio. The tracks below belong to the former Bessemer & Lake Erie, now owned by Canadian National. An inbound light power move came into Conneaut on these tracks 20 minutes before the NKP 765 showed up.

Images 6, 7 and 8 were all made in Painesville, Ohio. The train is crossing a trestle over the Grand River. All images were made a little beyond the west end of the trestle.

In a very well kept secret, Doyle McCormack was running the 765 between Conneaut and Bellevue on this move. That was his territory before he moved west.
