When Embarcadero West was "Grande Avenue"
Author: Evan_Werkema

Oakland, CA has a Grand Avenue 22 blocks north of here, but sometimes in the 90's, Embarcadero West (old 1st St.) became "Grande Avenue."

Here's Rio Grande SD45 5326 and SP SD40M-2 8556 rolling east in 1995. The 5326 lasted until 1997, the third-to-last Rio Grande SD45 to leave the roster.

D&RGW 3117 and 5347 arrive Oakland westbound in 1998. The 3117 held out until last October, when it became UP 1368, while the 5347 was retired without being renumbered in 2001.

The third-to-last Rio Grande GP30 to leave the roster, the 3015, spent a fair portion of 1998 in California. Here it is on the San Jose Turn. The crew was heard to remark over the radio, "Who'd want to take a picture of this piece of $#!^"

Not really related, but this was the Mulford switcher the same day I shot 3015. This was the extent of UP "patch" jobs at the time. While a number of SP units had been repainted by mid-1999, the patch renumbering program for unrepainted units didn't begin in earnest until 2000. SP 2605 would have become UPY 1173, but was retired exactly one year after this photo.

Awesome set of shots, Evan. Talk about heritage. When was the signal bridge taken down?

Got anymore to share???

Take Care,
Alex Ramos

Thanks. The signal bridge disappeared around 1997-98, but had been without signals since at least 1995.

Awesome!

I guess I had no idea how long those ped overpasses had been there.....my sister used to live on Alameda. I have a DRGW Geep working the bay in the fog somewhere around here....
