I'm guessing there's no round house, sand house, freight house or anything like that left at Willits.

Dave Date: 09/29/06 06:20 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: WAF It was a subsidary of the SP, but lost divisional seperation in 1981 when it became part of the SP's Western Division

Tom Date: 09/29/06 07:28 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: MrOGDEN Drew,
Thanks for sharing! These are the type of pictures I live for! Do you have any more? Thanks, Brad Date: 09/29/06 08:04 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: TonyJ Great shots Drew. Most of the buildings were already gone by the time I first got threre. - Tony J.

No, the 'roundhouse', turntable, and freight house are long gone memories. The yard is almost completely empty (except for some of the old North Coast Daylight passenger cars and other misc stored cars). The redwood depot is intact and used by the Cal Western, but the NWP line is out of service. Why was the turntable behind the roundhouse intead of in front of the stalls? Thanks!
Date: 09/29/06 09:56 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: spnudge Back then, most of the SDs on the NWP had those big can Mars lights and those stack covers over the exhaust. You can see the DB cable along with the regular MU cable. They didn't start removing the "Loop" systems until the early 70s.

Thank you again for sharing your photos! Date: 09/29/06 10:12 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: TCnR Wow, explains all those piles of sand that were all that was left by the time I got there. Did see them storing power there in the late 70's. No clue those buildings were there.
Date: 09/29/06 10:27 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: WAF Power was split between SD-7s and SD-9s in the sixties. Didn't become full SD-9s until the early seventies.

The question I have was how late could one expect to see a serviceable can Mars light? Date: 09/29/06 12:22 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: joemagruder Wasn't the NWP originally jointly owned by the AT&SF and the SP?
Date: 09/29/06 15:34 Re: The NWP in Willits, August 1966 Author: WAF 2742 retained its big headlight until it was rebuilt as 1442 in the mid seventies. There might have been one more.

Remember seeing an ash can going around the wye at Newark in the mid-70's, thought it was attached to an SD-7 but that would be an undocumented sighting. SF to Oakland freight, mid afternoon. |
