Depot Friday: Sallisaw, OK then & now
Author: santafe199

Here are two views of the Missouri Pacific depot at Sallisaw, Oklahoma 26 years apart.

1. MP Sallisaw, OK depot on October 5, 1984.

2. (former) MP Sallisaw, OK depot, now...

3. ...the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library with a very classy memorial to war veterans out front.
(photos 2-3 taken December 12, 2010)

Thanks for looking back & forth!

Depot has been greatly modified and the fence is also missing.

The first one looks more like the MP depot at Nowata, OK:

Sallisaw's depot looked like this in 1987 before the addition was made to the front:

That's VERY possible! I just got dome scanning my entire 1984 block of slides (still in the Kodak boxes). I had a lot of trouble with finding this location 29 years after the fact. I was visiting a musician friend that weekend in Tahlequah and we made a whirlwind trip throughout eastern Oklahoma, ending up in Fayetteville, AR to see some band friends of his play. My photography was definitely 'hit & run' on that swing, taking no notes. I was already slipping into bad habits that helped lead into a long hiatus from shooting... I settled on Sallisaw because of the street/depot/mainline orientation. The kicker was the location of that radio (or whatever) tower in relation to (west of) the depot. And it was easy to figure the depot had been remodeled some in 29 years and a change of ownership. If this is indeed Nowata (which I'll go with*), that makes a couple of other locations from that weekend fall a little easier in place.

I'll always accept corrections and am glad for them! Let's see now... 1984 done. 1987 done. Years of my shooting still in the little yellow Kodak boxes: 1985 & 1986 in Kansas, then 1988, 89, 90, 91, 91, 93, 94 , 96, 97, 98, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02 in Montana. All left to ID & Locate. The "up" side is that by 1991 I had become virtually inactive as a photographer. Wait a sec... living in Montana 23 years... maybe that should be the DOWN side :^(

*Would anyone care to agree with Evan? All corrections/confirmations gratefully accepted

Definately not the MP Sallisaw depot in the 80s photo. What have they done to the trackside of the library? I lived half a block from there for 8 months in 1993. I was through there in 1984 also and the KCS Depot was still there then.
