Labor day weekend found a couple of other railfans and I catching some of the last remnants of the Milwaukee Road. I guess times were a little more laid back then. The bridge tender invited us onto the bridge and even turned it while we were on there. Kind of a weird feeling being on that big of a structure while it swung open. The shot of the barge tow is looking West towards Iowa. Of course the operator had to gently coax the bridge back in line. Ha!

I can't remember, but I think the guys name was Pete. We were there when they had the shift change, and the other guy was friendly as well. What a neat job to be able to watch all the river traffic and the occasional freight train. I'm not sure what river boat this is? Probably one based out of Le Claire, IA.

One more, and the real reason we were hanging out by the bridge. I sure am glad I had that opportunity to experience a bridge operator at work. A truly unique job.

Great shots from a perspective you don't usually see! Back then Savanna and Sabula were heaven on earth to a Milwaukee Road fan. Great views, great equipment, and great people.
