WAG running extra (#12): My hometown depot!
Author: santafe199

I have here a few shots of my hometown Union Pacific depot from the camera of one William Arthur Gibson Jr. For as long as I’ve known Art, he’s been affectionately called “WAG Jr” by the rest of us Kansas Gang kids*. So of course, his father Bill was known as “WAG Sr”. This is a take-off of the initials in both names and, for the un-initiated will explain the WAG Nostalgia threads Art & I have been posting every Wednesday since April of ‘11.

From time to time I drive by the old UP passenger depot here in town. The mainline has been relocated several yards to the south & the ENTIRE area is unrecognizable from the old days. But invariably some memory from the past, including my childhood years will spring to mind. I found these 3 shots in my collection from an earlier thread series about an fantrip to Salina, KS for the Topeka NRHS boys. Here is a link: ( http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,2928834,2928834#msg-2928834> )

There was also some recent discussion about this depot & the giant neon sign that adorned the east end of the building for many years. Here’s another link:

Sorry about these images being re-posted but hey… it’s my hometown depot!

1. 2. & 3. Three black & white photos of/around the UP depot in Manhattan, KS. These were taken May 15, 1966 during an NRHS fantrip to from Topeka to Salina, KS by William A. Gibson Jr [Art].

Thanks for looking back!

back in those days a "fantrip" could be some fans riding regular trains which is often not so doable anymore with today's skeletal passenger rail network

Operating crews on the Union Pacific's passenger train#17 at Manhattan, were based out of Kanssas City and worked between KC and Ellis, KS (conductors and brakemen only). The Kansas City based passenger enginemen worked between KC and Junction City.
