Nostalgia & History > BN SD40-2's on the Front Range Sub.Date: 09/29/14 07:33 BN SD40-2's on the Front Range Sub. Author: SP8595 I'm not sure if Burlington Northern's (ex C&S) line between Denver and Cheyenne was called the Front Range Subdivision back in the early 90's as it is now called or was known by a different name. Back then it was mostly Cascade Green EMD SD40-2's instead of Orange GE's!
1)BN 8054 heads North with the town of Broomfield in the background in August of 1990. 2)Pulling up the grade out of Boulder heading South towards Denver, 8143 has a GE B30-7 B-unit and a SD-9 in the consist. The Front Range mountains are behind the train and the Valmont power plant is visible to the right of the train in the background. Shot was taken in September of 1990. 3)BN 8119 heads North with seven engines in November of 1992 leading Intermodal train 91 (or 92) through Lafayette (I think!). At least the LMX is somewhat hidden---seems like that is all that was here in the Tulsa area for years and we were deprived a lot of the Cascade Green units.

The FR Sub (old C&S)'main' doesn't go through Lafayette. The line to Lafayette is where the 'Buckwheat' splits off from the main from just north of Broomfield (Burns Jct, I think). It used to continue as the CB&Q up to Longmont then on to Lyons, but that CB&Q line was truncated between Lafayette and Longmont many years ago.
