I am trying to get my bearings here, I have been there couple times and then after the WM  was gone.  Is the photo looking west from the depot into what is a open field now?

Yes.  The orientation of the photo is a generally southwest; the depot is in back of me, and the yard tracks are running almost due north-south.  North is to the right.

You were really deep in the heart of WM country.  I made it to Hagerstown in Feb 1976 but never to Elkins.
