Erie Lackawanna E Units Bumped from Passenger Service
Author: aehouse

In the early spring of 1970, a quartette of Erie Lackawanna E-8 lcomotives, scare since the discontinuance of intercity passenger service that January, made a visit to Binghamton, N.Y. Former Lackawanna Railroad No. 815, which had spent its first two decades handling passenger trains, heads the foursome, now in freight service.

Those were the days . . . I thought the ex-Lackawanna's had Mars lights. Did EL remove them?

On some, but apparently not all. Former DL&W Es were numbered 809-819 on the EL; former Erie Es were 820-832.  Each railroad had rostered an 820 prior to the merger, so with the merger, DL&W no. 820 became EL 809.

I think I remember that 817 kept its Mars light AND portholes right up to the end.

Correct on both counts. I also remember 818 having its Mars light (and some weird grilles on one side)
