Utah Railway 5003 exits Martin Tunnel
Author: highgreengraphics

A Utah Railway coal load exits Martin Tunnel above Helper, UT on June 15, 2001, led by MK5000C UR 5003. These engines built by Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, ID still exist, though after continuous trouble all were relieved of their Caterpillar prime movers and replaced with EMD SD50 insides, and one, 5005, was repainted into orange and black. They are hard to find on the front of trains now, as coal trains are lead with UP or BNSF power, and Utah Railway power is only used mid-train, and the coal loadout beyond this tunnel was not being used as of last report. The ex-B&O SD-40's evident behind were also purged in favor of ex-Hamersley Iron Australian SD50's. === === = === JLH

Excellent shot, made amazing by the fact the the train actually left with the sun in the right position
(no three hour air test) and no cloud arrived simultaneously to screw up the shot. A picture well worth
your effort.

Excellent!  I had not seen any well-lit shots from this angle before.
