Nostalgia & History > Rock Island steam locomotive explosion in 1920Date: 08/24/16 08:15 Rock Island steam locomotive explosion in 1920 Author: JoCoLB This photo shows the aftermath of a Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad steam locomotive explosion near Paxico, Kan., on June 13, 1920. The explosion occurred about 1 mile east of Paxico near the Mill Creek bridge. Killed were a three-man crew from Herington, Kan. --- the engineer, fireman and head brakeman. It was speculated that the boiler was allowed to run low on water. I have no other details other than the explosion and subsequent wreck happened just several yards from the Mill Creek bridge.
