Amtrak E8As 496 and 498

At the Chicago Engine Terminal on June 16, 1977.
  • E8A 496 was built in September 1952 as PRR 5710A
  • E8A 498 was built in January 1951 as PRR 5809

hell look at the roadbed ... it's a wonder the units stayed on the track ...i remember Penn Coach Yard looking like that ... we coooonstaaaantly had derailments to the point that some manager finally decided to put money into the terminal areas ...

Most interesting post. Amtrak converted five E8As, all originally PRR Units, to HEP and numbered them #495-#499.
All except #496 shown in your photos presently survive.
#496 was scrapped C 1986.
#498 has survived as Bennett Levin’s PRR #5809.
