KCS Slug program

Why did the KCS like the slug program so much ????
Lack of money to purchase new "Newer power"
or just didn't want to waste use power ????

The trains the slugs handled rarely made over 35 or so mph so the big factor was tractive effort and not
horsepower. The slugs offered cheap tractive effort where speed wasn't needed plus they already had all
the makings in house and paid for.
