Nostalgia & History > Chicago Union Station w/ RR signs -- Aug 74Date: 03/19/17 13:33 Chicago Union Station w/ RR signs -- Aug 74 Author: gcm This is a rescan of Union Station with pre-Amtrak signs.
Also a much earlier picture with the way the station looked. Gary Date: 03/19/17 13:51 Re: Chicago Union Station w/ RR signs -- Aug 74 Author: Milwaukee They played a bit of Scrabble with the letters over the year. Some of the old letters were carried forward but swapped around to keep up with the name changes. You can spot some of the new ones that had to be fabricated as well as they are a little brighter than the old ones especially in the Nothern for the new BN name.
Thanks for sharing. I thought it was interesting to see it referred to as the Milwaukee R.R. in the early days. Date: 03/20/17 05:55 Re: Chicago Union Station w/ RR signs -- Aug 74 Author: refarkas The railroads on the signs are now all fallen flags. What pieces of history these photos are!.
Bob Date: 03/20/17 06:09 Re: Chicago Union Station w/ RR signs -- Aug 74 Author: njmidland Hoboken Terminal was easy - just add "Erie" on top of "Lackawanna".
The full Erie Lackawanna sign has now been up for more than twice as long post-EL than the life of the EL. It still lights up every night. Tim Date: 03/20/17 11:05 Re: Chicago Union Station w/ RR signs -- Aug 74 Author: wabash2800 It's a wonder they spent the money to change the names based on what little value passenger service had by then.
