SANTA FE activity in Emeryville Days !!
Author: KeyRouteKen

Santa Fe's 40th & San Pablo Station in Oakland once was a busy place. ALCO PA # 65 is on the point of Train # 4, and 4-6-4 # 3458 heads back to Richmond with deadhead equipment from Train # 7 on 2/11/50...

Terrific picture. Thanks for sharing.

I had posted a few questions on Santa Fe bay area operations the past month. One question was inquiring whether Santa Fe was able to service the fleet, both engines and cars at Emeryville, or did the trains have to be deadheaded to Richmond for service. The consensus was that very rarely if at all were any locos or cars deadheaded to Richmond, yet this picture of 3458 deadheading with cars back to Richmond indicates that maybe it was more common than thought.

So was the steam power sent back to Richmond for service due to no facilities after the diesels arrived, and did certain trains, such as the mail train, have it's equipment deadheaded into Richmond for service then returned to Richmond the following night for the outbound #8?
