A little help please...
Author: Train611

Hello folks...

I know some of you will see this request as an easy one but that is why we have Trainorders...

The small letters under the 3050 are: GP-38/2QEG DRS-20D

I don't know but will guess DRS-20D could stand for Diesel Road Switcher 2000 HP with Dynamic brake.

GP-38 Model number:

2QEG...no clue...

Thanks for any help...

According to the Canadian Trackside Guide a GP-38/2QED is a GP38-2 that is equipped with Q-Tron Electric Governor for increased haulage capacity.

In addition to the above, the D at the end of 20D is CP's classification of the unit.

When GP38-2 No. 3023 returned to service after refurbishment in 2013, I had a chance to get some close-up shots, one of the cabside showing the marking GP38QEG (no dashes, slashes or other punctuation).

I asked the editor of the Trackside Guide about this and he told me about the Q-Tron Electronic Governor, but he was surprised that this was now the model designation because all but one of CP's original GP38-2 units have this governor, so it is not a distinguishing feature. Previously, these units were stencilled simply as GP38-2.

So it seems that this new identification is being added when these units are being refurbished.

As the Guide notes, some of the GP38AC units now have the Q-Tron governor.

One of them is CP 3005, which was refurbished last year (including being repainted from its former green livery) and its cabside is now stencilled GP38AC/QEG.

I believe the E means the builder, EMD.

No, it doesn't. The letter at the end of CP's model designation indicates the specific order by CP for that type of locomotive.

Both the GP38AC and GP38-2 types are classified by CP as DRS-20 (Diesel Road Switcher, 2000 horsepower). The letter following the -20 indicates the order placed with the builder.

The first six GP38AC units (built in 1970) are 20a, the final 14 (built in 1971) are 20b. Of the GP38-2 units, the first 20 are 20c, the next 45 are 20d, and the final 50 are 20e.

The example shown in Train 611's photo is 3050, which is in the 20d group (built in 1985/86).

As discussed earlier, the QEG stands for Q-Tron Electronic Governor.

Thanks to each of you for your replies.

Much appreciated.

And that Q-Tron package is an interesting addition to these units.

The Trackside Guide also notes that the Canadian Pacific classification system does not distinguish between builders.
