Some CN trains at and near Otterburn Park
Author: Mberry

This morning I was on the south shore of Montreal in an attempt to shoot CN 905, a rail train that had two SD40's for power. Unfortunately it never left Southwark Yard. While I was back in my car after waiting for it in the freezing cold, I saw CN 120 whizz by on the St-Hyacinthe Sub. I quickly gave chase and beat it, giving me mere seconds to get in position for the first shot, which shows a trio of GE's (CN 2911, CN 2689 & CN 2102) blasting past the Saint-Basile-le-Grand AMT station with CN 120 for Halifax. This is the first time I shoot one of the brand new 2900's leading.

Next stop was Otterburn Park where the CN main lines crosses the Richelieu River. Not too long after I arrived CN 310 passed with SD70M-2's at the head end and mid-train (CN 8830 & CN 8888). Even after setting off 76 cars at Southwark Yard, it still had 416 axles. Of note is the local fire department doing some training exercises on the river.

The other train I shot at Otterburn Park was CN 705 (empty oil train for Alberta). It has CN 8808, CN 2634 and CN 8940. At the head end are loaded TankTrain cars, with refined fuel for Maitland, Ontario. The second shot shows how the cars are interconnected.

2911 looks great in the lead on 120.

Interesting, we've discussed the Northern version of the Tank Train but this is the first photos I've seen.

CN ran a dedicated unit train (twice a day in each direction I believe) from the refinery near Quebec City to Montreal until a pipeline replaced it two years ago.

I have a Flickr album with a large amount of TankTrain photos.

That first shot looks almost 3D it is so sharp and crisp. Great work, I liked them all!

Great bunch, so apparently no cover cars required north of the border?

If by cover car you mean a buffer car, no, buffers cars are not required in Canada.

Buffer cars aren't required on unit trains in Canada. If it is a mixed freight with a dangerous goods (placarded car) on the head end, it requires a buffer.

Great pics, Mike !

Pretty uncommon to see the Richelieu river completely frozen at that spot, BTW.
