Creating a night time IOTD for BCR4619
Author: Train611

Hello fellow TO'ers...
I recently had the pleasure of meeting BCR4619 at Kamloops.
An excellent photographer, he offered many photos of his trip to the Kamloops region.
The KHR and CN joined forces for a daytime trip and also the night time photo op at the CNoPR Last Spike ceremony.
CNRHA did a nice job with the whole set-up of the weekend.
Here is a little bit of the setup process and the group of photographers that came out arond 2200 hrs.

1. KHR 2141 was pulled out of the shop by CN2141
2. Assisting with the moves the train crew will bring CN2141 back to the photo location.
3. There were about 20 or so interested photographers taking  what will be a memorable side-by-side  set of images.

The yard tracks were "known to be clear" of train movements, with the help of CN Police and KHR volunteers.

A great image by BCR4619, and an nice weekend arranged by all parties. CN;KHR;CNRHA:CNS

Thanks to all.

What was the date of the shoot?  It looks like there is still a glow in the sky even at 10.pm plus.

Here's Kamloops Heritage Railway 2141 in the shop just prior to the night photo session.

It was built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in Kingston ON. in the fall on 1914 and is a 2-8-0.  It was a Canadian Northern locomotive, classed as a "light Consolidation".
As built, it would have had a headlight mounted above the smokebox, and a very similar number plate mounted at the centre of the smokebox.

It was bumped from mainline freight service by larger and heavier steam locomotives during the Canadian National years, and was converted to oil from coal firing.

It ended its service years on Vancouver Island, where the late Dave Wilkie took some spectacular pictures of it north of Victoria.

Finally, it was donated by CN to the City of Kamloops in the early 1960's, where it was displayed in Riverside Park for three decades.

Time and vandals were not kind to 2141, and by the early 1990's, the City was planning to remove and possibly scrap the locomotive from the park.

A group of Kamloops citizens proposed to restore the locomotive in a large building owned by the city. Kamloops has many industries, including a pulp mill , sawmills and vehicle repair shops. Many skilled tradesman helped to restore 2141 to operating condition by the late 1990's.  The city building it was rebuilt in was scheduled for demolition, and a new shop was built adjacent to the CN Lorne Street yard and station in downtown Kamloops. Coaches were acquired or leased for 2141 to haul.

By 2012, further work was required to keep 2141 operational, and a couple of years without operation happened while funds to make the repairs were generated.

It was hoped to have 2141 operational in time for the CNor celebration, but that was not to be as it awaits a new boiler certificate.

A sad note, Gene Davies, a former BC Rail locomotive engineer and long time shop foreman at the Kamloops Heritage Railway facility passed away a day before the CNor celebration.

Sorry to hear of Gene Davis passing. I know he put a lot of time and effort into restoring and operating 2141. I visited the Kamloops steam shop couple of times, there was quite a large workforce of volunteers doing various things to complete the restoration, one of  the oldest gentlemen there at the time was 90 and he did a full day of work on 2141. I chuckled during one of the visits during the lunch break at the shops,  the "foreman" said lunch is over and they all got up and went back to work on the 2141. Must have been a "Union Shop"

Gene Davis hired out with BC Rail may 1972 having come from the New York Central ex Michigan Central Rly in southern Ontario. I worked as a trainman / Conductor with Gene in Chetwynd BC and later on did some "Engineer training" with him on the Lillooet sub. There is another retired BC Rail'er involved with 2141, Gordon MacDonald, I worked with Gord quite often. Kelly Rowland, retired BCR, ran the train at the Kamloops animal park. These gentlemen were well liked and repsected by the BCR crews and managers,  Doug
