Canadian Railroads > Quebec Gatineau at Barking Dog

One of our favorite spots to shoot the Quebec Gatineau on the Lachute sub is "Barking Dog" crossing, so named because of the two hounds that inhabit the property next to the level crossing.  As we wait for the train the beasts bark nonstop.  But when the crossing bells start the barks turn to frenzied howls and panic running.

Ah, the joys of rural railfanning.

Reminds me of "Barking Dog Curve" which was somewhere near South Slocan on the Boundary Sub (near Nelson BC).  Trainman Grant Will named it so, because every time a train came close, a dog would rush trackside, barking in a frenzy. He noted that although the dog was not on a leash, he would race around in circles, clockwise for eastbounds, counter clockwise for westbounds.By the time I worked that route as a trainman, the dog had gone to puppy heaven but you could still see the circular path he had worn in his owners yard.

I tried to pass along this tale to my wife and it took me about five minutes because I was laughing so hard!  Thanks for sharing!

Video would be impossible at Barking Dog unless one has a well developed sense of humour.
