MLW Monday - CN HR616 at Brockville
Author: feclark

Today's post has CN HR616 2119 leading M-636 2314 and C-630M 2022 on an unidentified WB with auto racks and mixed freight at 1340 on August 12, 1987. The location is just past the west end of Brockville yard, maybe Lyn [?], just before the Kingston Sub ducks under the 401. They were not, in spite of what the model suggests, "High Reliability" (soon after they were delivered, I was at Gordon Yard in Moncton and ran into George Parks, who told me they had to tow the thing down to the station for its big publicity debut), but they sure had clean lines, and the black face mask really looked good on this livery.

In the fall of 1994, there were two two-unit consists of 2100s working out of Campbellton, NB.  I asked the engineer of the Dalhousie way freight what he thought of his power.

His response?

"These things can't pull their way out of their own shadows."

Kind of sad to hear for an Alcophile who watched Centuries lugging tonnage in Western Pennsylvania growing up.

It also may explain why neither WNY&P or the D-L have picked up any of the 2100s apparently stil languishing at NRE.

Great shot, by the way!  Pardon my rudeness.

I heard a nick name for these units was "Oil Stove". Probably related to their questionable pulling abilities. Cool shot, Fred.

Great shot and that is Lyn.  It's worth noting that 2119 had the first desktop control stand on CN, a feature that seemed like a good idea at the time and later proved a nuisance.

The 2100's had all sorts of mechanical improvements over the M-Lines that preceded them.  But they had unfortunate electrical systems that made then load oddly.

Great shot Fred. Thanks for the picture. Ken thanks for the info.
CN Lines. Volume 14, Number 3 has a great 10 page article on the HR-616's.
