Dan Posted from iPhone Date: 02/17/15 04:15 Re: 27 hours before it derailed Author: hwb36604 I shot NS 314 in a rare snowstorm in Tuscaloosa last year. Ten minutes later it was involved in a grade crossing accident that left two people dead.

Although there appears nothing wrong with the train at the time you took the photo it might just be helpful to any inquiry into the incident if just to show it was in good order. It might be worthwhile enquiring if the investigating team including the railroad might want to see your picture.

Regards TL Date: 02/17/15 07:22 Re: 27 hours before it derailed Author: toledopatch I don't think it shows much that will be particularly useful to an investigation, but I can certainly tell anyone who cares that I observed nothing unusual about the train. Of course, after I shot the picture, I wasn't being especially observant because I just wanted to get out of the wind and cold, but I'd have surely noticed a slider or a thumper.
Without any further information to go on, I'm leaning toward the broken-rail theory for the wreck, but it's probably going to be months before we learn anything official unless the NTSB finds something that warrants immediate remedial action by the industry. Consist was a little different, BNSF leader with the Citirail as a DPU, but definitely a shock to learn it was the same train.
