Detoured NS?
Author: Ohiorailfan

The past 2 days here in Columbus, Ohio we have multiple symbols that I've never seen down here. 12X, 16E, M8A, 10X, 344, and 331. The 12X, 344, and 331 took the Dayton District and died at Moraine/Dayton. The others went towards Portsmouth. Maybe someone can shine some light on why these are running this way.

Thanks

331 is normally a Detroit-Bellevue train, and 344 normally runs Toledo-Bellevue. Sounds like Bellevue is jammed up.

Similarly, 16E and M8A (extra 18A) should be Conway trains. Hmmm.

Last year, 12X was running in the Harrisburg area. It seems as if recently NS has split some routes, so that may be why you're getting new symbols.

heard a 35A other day & got it today in South Fork, PA. That train isnt a normal train on the Pittsburgh Line, not just that area of the system.

Some schedule changes here going on...not detours.

16E = BRC/Chicago to Portsmouth
18A = UP/Ashland Ave. Chicago to Portsmouth
331 = Detroit to Moraine
344 = Toledo to Moraine

Also as info...any NS that ends in X is an extra train from one yard to another that they do not have scheduled train to. So if say Bellevue gets enough cars classed to go to say Norfolk as an example then will build a 10X or 12X, etc and run the train as that. That is why you see the same X symbol trains coming out of and going to different locations around the system. It is a pool symbol to use as needed around the system.

35A is a new regular symbol (Enola-Conway)...basically replaces 37A (which is now Wilmington, DE-Enola).
