Tier 4 EMD's testing on CSX
Author: nygiant

Haven't heard any news of these units testing in a couple of weeks. That sounds like bad news?

Though they've been out of service at times, they're definately still testing. The pair led Q573 south from Cincinnati yesterday afternoon. This was the scene in Covington Kentucky as they crawled across the Ohio River Bridge. The Cincinnati Skyline can be seen in the distance.

Anyone know how the crews feel about them?

Does an EMD rep. ride with these units?

Testing them out of Cincinnati isn't a test. Bring them to Grafton and put them on the M&K helper. That will be a real test to see what they can do.

We've seen enough photos of these units. What we need is video of them under load and at grade crossings so we know what the new horn arrangement sounds like.

I too would like to hear the 1010J under load. As far as the horn goes, it looks like the standard K5LLA behind the cab, just all bells forward. You probably wouldn't hear much (if anything) from the rear-facing horns as the train is coming at you.

Dragging/pushing out of M&K at 20mph isn't a test, it's a quiz, albeit an important one.  Dragging a 1.4% at 20, run to 50mph for 4 miles, slam on the dynamics for a 20mph curve, then to 45, then dragging on 2% again, then 50, then 15mph for street running, then 45....  You start getting the picture.  That is a test of the locomotives abilities.  Drag, acceleration, braking, etc.  Cincinnati to Nashville is perfect for that.

Oh, both units are having issues today (Saturday).  1609 has "air brake problems" and 1610 has an alerter defect.

Well, I just checked that off the list. Not much of a distinction IMO.

Damn, if that's all the noise they make under load we are screwed as railfans, at least for new locomotives.  Thanks EPA.

As someone that treats several retired and still active railroad employees for their work induced hearing loss, they would welcome a quiet locomotive.

Most horns (At least on UP and I believe in BNSF) have most to all but one facing rear - and they are still very effective.

All the ACe's I've been in, the horn is very noticeable in the cab than the GE's with the same horn. We can only speculate that EMD is running more air to them.

However the recent batches of ACe's that are in service are very much a quiet ride compared to the non-isolated and first generation isolated cabs. You can actually have a normal conversation.

That's not what EMD & GE are here for, if you want loud units under load then build them yourself snd test on your own track. Foamers, think of me first and crews second....that's just wrong.

Speak for yourself.  I do not, as a railfan, feel "screwed" by quieter locomotives.

if the cabs are equipped with in cab voice recorders i would hope those conversations are kept to topics that are railroad related ... just sayin... HA !!!! :-)

Sure, because a better work environment is a terrible thing. I just don't understand the foamer community sometimes....

Low volume is OK with me.  I just like units with smooth sound.  Those have it.

Has no one else noticed those units weren't exactly working flat out on the video? Get them in run 8 on a 2% grade and i think there'll be some increase in volume...
