Wasn't Lordstown where Chevrolet manufactured the Chevy Vega?  That was a worthless waste of steel and labor..

I agree with observation about the Vega.  I wonder whether line is still in use or out of service.

The Lordstown Sec goes as far as Milton from Milt to Alliance is OOS. A 20 foot section of rail was removed around Alliance and several crossings have been paved over.

Don't forget about aluminum. Wasn't that the big problem?

Followed up by the impeccable Cavalier-Sunbird- Sunfires that would needed jump started to get them off the truck. It's now the Cruze assembly plant and finally a decent vehicle.

another remnant of a once fine east coast to Chicago main line that should've never been torn up ...

Yes.  The aluminum engine block had the pistons runing on silicon impreganted cylinder walls instead of steel sleeves as was the regular practice.  A technology not quite ready for prime time, it has been refined and used quite successfully in the decades since.

The Lordstown Secondary is still in service as far as North Jackson, OH, where NS continues to serve an active customer.  The line between North Jackson and Allliance Junction (near Sebring) has been dormant for many years, but has not been torn up.  NS operates a turn between Youngstown and Lordstown two or three times a week, and there are occasional stone trains to a stone facility on the north side of Lordstown Yard.  The GM plant at Lordstown has access to CSX and NS, with NS doing all the switching.  There must be some sort of joint facility agreement between NS and CSX governing the operations of Lordstown Yard.  Although NS does the switching, most of the GM traffic moves on CSX, using a connection to the CSX main from the west end of Lordstown Yard.

In the PRR days, this line provided a western connection to the PRR Chicago-Pittsburgh main line for traffic to and from Youngstown, Warren and Niles.  PRR once had substantial business in those places, mostly with the many steel mills along the Mahoning Valley.  The line was not used by trains between the East Coast and Chicago, but it certainly handled a great deal of traffic in the glory days of Youngstown's steel industry.  Alas, the mills are gone, and there wasn't enough other traffic left to support keeping the entire line active.

i got the line mixed up with the E-L man line ... thanks for the correction ...

as for the auto plant ... from what i can see on goo sat maps all of the interplant trackage has been torn up except for an autorack loading area at the east end of the plant and a scrap loading area at the opposite end of the huge complex at the  west end ... doesn't look like any auto partds boxcars get delivered any longer
