If you were going to SoCal next week...
Author: pmack

what would you want to see? My wife, daughter and I are going to LA and San Diego next Friday (the 26th) and staying until the next Thursday. So far the museum at Balboa park is on the list. Are the work sessions interesting? Anyone here going to be there on Tuesday the 2nd? I'd like to see Cajon Pass but that is a ways from Santa Monica where my brother-in law lives.

Thoughts? Ideas?

TIA,
Paul Mack
Hillsboro, OR

1. In-n-Out Burger (breakfast, lunch and supper).
2. Whistle Stop Model Trains on 4th Ave in Hillcrest (San Diego).
3. Balboa Park Model Railroad ... good call.
4. Definitely Cajon Pass.
5. Did I mention In-n-Out Burger?

Don't forget the in-n-out "secret menu".

PE - 4 x 4, protein and animal style...yum!

Since you mentioned Santa Monica:

Whistle Stop Trains in Pasadena
Travel Town - kind of rough and rusty but some cool engines nevertheless
LA Union Station
Phillipes restaurant - across from LA station
Ride Amtrak Surfliner to San Diego
Lunch at Fullerton Depot Cafe - good railfan spot, particularly if you have family in tow
Milepost 38 Model trains in Anaheim Hills

Just my 2c,

Paul, if you still need something to do, you're always welcome to visit the California Southern Model Railroad Club in Norwalk, CA. There are typically members there running trains on Tuesday and Friday evenings between about 5 and 10 PM. A majority of the club members will typically disappear for about an hour around 7 PM to grab a bite at one of the local beaneries, but they are typically back and running trains by 8 or so.

Have fun In the LA Basin, and be sure to take the rain back with you when you leave... :-P

What day do you plan to visit the San Diego Model Railroad Museum? We'd be glad to see you any day except Monday (when we're closed); FWIW I'm generally there Tuesday, Friday, Sunday. Tuesday is a good choice if you can do it; we usually run the Tehachapi Pass layout on CTC on Tuesday (we've been having trouble with the signal system lately, so can't promise you).

Museum, a must!

Umm....in-n-out opens at 10:30am...kind of late for breakfast. :-) So, Lunch, dinner, and midnight snack! Oh, and by the time you get a 4x4, why not just get two double doubles!?! And yes, that menu link is not complete. Animal fries are the best! I guess looking again, that's the 'not so secret menu'. There is still the 'secret' menu then. ;-)

Cajon isn't really that far from Santa Monica. Ok, an hour each way. But with 50+ trains a day...lots of action. McDonald's off the 138, in-n-out in hesperia, and other stuff to do in/out of the area. If you have 6+ hours, make a day of it. That's what I did when I only had a few days in So. Cal over the holidays.

Enjoy.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I am looking forward to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. I think the current plan is to go on Tuesday, before the In and Out.
