Big news is the FA-2's.  Only A units shown so I was wondering if a B unit would also be done?  Wish it was an FA-1 in New Haven.

We're doing A units first and then doing B units separately.  We don't want to stretch people's wallets more than we have to.

We did the same with the CN FP9A and F9B.  It worked quite well.

Yes, Jason I agree with half of this - SP&S please.  BN FA's might as well be dummies as i think they sat pretty much in deadlines. My early 70ies BN annual is in storage so cannot check this out but maybe someone can correct me.  I do not recall ever seeing a photo reference of either of the FA-2's in BN paint.

...yes Rick, I'm with you, I think Jason will be tired of hearing me ask for the SP&S ones on that "other forum"...
...and I don't find anything in my BN books indicating that the FA2's made it into Cascade Green, they were phased out pretty soon after the merger...

cheers,

But the ex-SP&S FAs did continue for a while on the road in BN road numbers, albeit, still in SP&S Colors mixed in with all sorts of other great 1st and 2nd generation road power in the PNW..

Harry I agree but do see more photos of the FB's than the FA's.  It might just be coincidence on the photos i've looked at and missed the ones with FA's.

Taking a leaf from Bowser, I would recommend not producing the BN numbered units with original paint.  The C636's are still sitting around despite the fact thy ran in that scheme longer than the SP&S numbered units.  When Jason does the SP&S Broadband scheme, he could put in decals with BN numbers.

However, do not forget that the SP&S had two schemes; the original and the ever popular (among SP&S fans) Broadband.

I never, ever saw a photov of a BN painted FA. I just don't think it happened. And I have all the old BN Power Annuals by Hol Wagner.

Enough about whatever that HO thing is. Here is one of my favourite shots from a trip in February2008. Two GMD-1s doing some local work in the south end of 'Toon and the Saskatoon Transit GM Classic that I rode down there in. 1438 which is included in the numbers and 1405 with the outline numbers. Is there any decal for those outline numbers like what was on 1405?

Edit: I looked up the GMD-1s in my 2011 Trackside Guide and found that 1046 and 1600 from the original batch work for representing 1997. I am unclear if any of the 1400s like these were in operation in 1997 yet or if everything still had the A1A trucks?

Definitely BN numbers on the FA2s please. I bought more of the C636s in BN numbers and zero in SP&S numbers.

It looks like all the Bruce photos are FA-1 models since the radiator shutters are at the rear of the carbody. The FA-2 models have a short section of grill behind the shutters and the carbody end.

The SP&S had two FA-2 units going into the merger. These were the 868 & 869 which were slated to become BN 4124 & BN 4126. This is from the roster of Hol Wagner's BN Annual of 1971 on page 44.

The photo roster on page 63 of the same volume has a photo of BN 4126 and a roster entry but no mention for BN 4124. During the first year of operation 70 diesels were retired. The photo roster included all locomotives on the BN roster 03/02/70 to 05/01/71. From that information I would say SP&S 868 was retired prior to the merger as were two FB-1,FB-2 units SP&S 210 & 213.

BN 4126 was sold to Joseph Simon & Sons 08/08/72 along with FA-1s 4114 & 4118. All the other FA-1 units were retired in 1971 and 06/72.

So it seems BN started out with 11 FA-1 and 1 FA-2 locos all retired in the first 15 months of operation. There were no BN FB diesels of either model.
