Carolinian Derailed After Hitting Truck
Author: CA_Sou_MA_Agent

Just saw on the news what appears to be the Carolinian on the ground at Halifax, NC after colliding with a tractor-trailer rig. Locomotive is on its side.

It's the northbound Carolinian - Train 80. Locomotive on its side, one car full derailed but upright, another derailed but in-line.

Just saw this, too. Hope the Locomotive crew survived, and wasn't hurt too badly. ... had to be a darned hard collision for it to have derailed like it did.

When are these idiots going to ever learn that the odds are heavily against them when they try to beat a train.

One person's stupidity affected a lot of people in that community.
Having a baggage car on the train may have made a difference
in the number of injuries.

Initial reports are no injuries but with that locomotive on it's side like that you'd have to think someone is at least bruised up a bit. The baggage care is upright but twisted about 30 or 45 degrees from the direction it was headed. Looks like the train stopped in about 250 feet, judging from the location of the engine, baggage, and one coach past the intersection. Surely someone was walking around and got bumped around. I hope everyone is fine but it would be a miracle if everyone came out without at least some minor injuries. Wouldn't that up set the lawyers?

I 'love' reading initial reports like this. The woman was in the 7th car, but 'she didn't hear a whistle'. No, she probably didn't hear a whistle on her whole trip if she was in the 7th car.

I'm sure she also knew there were only minor injuries. She probably did a walk-through of all 7 cars to determine that.

In any case, so much for the cab car argument. This locomotive was leading the train and it derailed similar to the cab car in CA. Hope everyone is ok.

I can't help but think about how expensive these wrecks are for Amtrak and who pays for the damages, much less any injuries....

Did you see what this train hit? Looks like a low boy with a large load. Shudder to think if this train had been in push mode...

This is approx MP A90 where track speed is 70 mph due to a curve, which has a long history at http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=003adj.

So tired of idiots. Unbelievable. Wonder if the trailer was hung up on the tracks.

Here in NH a box truck has hit a railroad bridge in Exeter, with damage reported. Let's hope only to the truck.

Looks like 6 axles on one side of the track and a long flatbed with the load under a tarp on the other side of the tracks. Makes you wonder if it got high centered at the crossing. I remember reading about an over sized load that took about 10 days to travel the highways from the midwest to a plant in Florida. The rig got stuck on the track leading into the destination. They were supposed to have a permit to cross the tracks with a load with that configuration but failed. The crossing was crested slightly, but it was enough to cause the truck to hang up. Amtrak came along and you know what happened.

I wonder if the State Patrol alerted the railway officials to the fact that the line was blocked by the transport.

The witness stated that the truck was there for about 15 minutes and that a State Trooper was there to help.

Some of the news reports are interesting, one said a "cabin" was laying on its side.

The load was large, but looks like it may have not been extremely dense from the way the locomotive pushed through it and pictures don't show massive damage to the nose of the locomotive. It could have been a lot worse if it was a big electric transformer and did not get pushed out of the way by the loco.

Yes, and except for the crew, the locomotive was unoccupied, as was the baggage car. How many injuries would there have been if the locomotive in this incident was an occupied cab car, instead?

Yet again no mention of what train it is or where it was going in the news report. But when Delta ran off the runway last week, it was almost immediately reported the flight number and origination.
