Is there anything to prevent someone from driving down the middle?

Yeah, there's a big light rail train right in the middle!  ;)

It looks like crossing gates close off the entire roundabout when a train is going through. This might solve the worries of some in Santa Cruz about the roundabout there.

I got into a taxi in New Orleans about six weeks ago, the driver had been in the US maybe three weeks. He drove right up the trolley right of way as it eases off the street just west of the Holiday Inn west of Poydras and the Superdome. It's a solid concrete apron but decidedly too narrow for a street, and curbed on both sides.

I hadn't been paying attention until I saw a cat pole getting close to me. Smacking the curbing stopped us from hitting the pole. Nothing like a trained professional at the wheel... Ah, the joys of business travel.

Almost, the gate protecting the circular roadway looks like it leaves a little space for a car to wiggle through.Interesting to look at the Google Maps aerial as the gates are down:

The gates here are for those drivers who choose to use them as a signal not to continue. Those who choose to ignore them are the same ones who run stop signs and railroad crossing gates.
