Rescuing a Failed Train - South Australia

Hi all,

On 7/11/15, Pacific National service, 4PM6 hauled by NR81, NR100 stalled between Belair and Mt. Lofty in South Australia after NR100 failed. Due to the train being on a 2.2% grade, rescue engines NR86 and AN6 were sent to pull the train back into the siding at Belair. After allowing priority service 7MP7 to pass through hauled by NR70, NR39, NR27, the rescue engines then run around 4PM6 and were placed on the lead before it finally continued on its journey.

1 & 2. 4PM6 with AN6, NR86 rounds Fosters Corner at Belair.

3. 4PM6's original power in the form of NR81, NR100.

Next lot.

1. 7MP7 with NR70, NR39, NR27 overtakes the rescue engines at Belair. An Adelaide Metro 3000 series DMU stands in the platfrom.

2. Another view of 7MP7.

3. The rescue engines having cut off the rear of 4PM6.

Next lot.

1 & 2. Close up shots of AN6 from front and rear so you can see the roof details. These Clyde/ EMD model JT46C were built between 1992 and 1994 with a class total of 11. They are mechanically and electrically the same as an SD60.

3. NR86 stands in front of the heritage list Belair station. The original signal cabin was built in 1886 and was closed in 1977. It was destroyed by fire in 2003 which also damaged the building alongside. Both were eventually rebuilt a couple of years ago.

Should be AT46C not JT46C, it's only a single cab cowl design not dual cabs. Believe even Clyde goofed that up in the manual.

It was nice to see an AN leading even if it was only briefly.

As for the model, they should be a AT46C but Clyde stuffed up somewhere and everything including the builders plates were labelled JT46C.

If a Pacific National train fails, must it be rescued by Pacific National units? Or, could one of the other operators be tasked with that job?

If a train fails it all depends if it was a loco failure or the train just stalled to what they do.
If a train stalls they normally get the following train to push it through the section or if there is no other movements double the hill or send rescue engines.
If it is a loco failure, the train may be rescued by a different operator to clear a section and the relief engines sent.
