South African industrial steam -- Grootvlei Proprietary Gold Mine
Author: PERichardson

Today's installment will present Grootvlei Proprietary Mines railway at Springs.  The 7 km railway linked three producting mine shafts.  They also operated a passenger train at changes of shift.  All locos were former SAR.  A  highlight of this line was that, after a dinner with famed author/photographer Dusty Durrant and wife Christine in downtown Springs,  we would go out and pace a train from a mine shaft back to the plant.  The road was close enough to almost being able to touch the engine and doing this in the dark of night was an unforgettable experience.

1-2.   0-8-0 No. 2,  "Big Mac" at 3 Shaft and approaching the dumper.  Both 5/30/84  Former SAR S class 367

3,  4-8-0 "Puffing Duggie" near the engine shed.  7/2/83   Former SAR class 8D

Really like the look of the green loco with the silver jacket bands and red side rods. All black all the time is boring.

# 5 Joyce appears to be a 2-8-2.

If you look to the left of the cylinder casing you can make out the other wheel of the leading truck
