International Railroad Discussion > South African industrial steam -- MiscellaneousDate: 01/12/16 05:14 South African industrial steam -- Miscellaneous Author: PERichardson Here are three different operations for which there wasn't a lot to cover, hence only a few shots,
1. Dunns Locomotive & Boiler Works, located in Witbank, offered comprehensive steam locomotive repair services. They also hired out locomotives, most notably to the Enyati Ry whose contract ceased in 1987. They also had a couple of switchers that, if lucky, one could catch in action. Here is their 4-8-2T "Dubs" in action. Built in 1897 by Dubs & Co, Glasgow, Scotland, this was originally SAR class A No. 150. Photo on 6/13/84 2-3. Rand Water Board rostered a pair of "Nigerian" 0-8-0T to haul coal to their water pumping operation (serving Johannesburg) at Swartkoppies. The line connecting the plant with the SAR at Rainwater is only 3 miles long. Loco No. 1 was built by Hunslet in 1938. The first two images, taken 6/13/84, show 4-8-2 #4, former SAR class 14R 1908, in action. The third is of No. 5, former SAR 14R No. 1701, taken 6/17/92. Steam operation here ended in 1995 with the acquisition of two former SAR GE U18C-1 diesels (32 class).
