In my quest to see 1000 trains this year, I've been logging each sighting in a notebook. Early in the morning last Saturday, as I tallied up another page worth of trains, I noticed I was getting close to the halfway point of 500. Although I didn't quite realize it when I grabbed this shot, the first train in daylight was #500, BNSF 5271 west with a Z-train at Walapai, AZ. The 4th unit in the train is the fabled BNSF 8197 with the two striping schemes. Due to the lack of contrast in the mountains, this one looks pretty nice when converted to B&W. I hope you like it.

And for those of you who did the math, I am lagging a bit on the year. I'm currently about 60 trains short of where I need to be (573 by midnight tonight) but I expect my remaining trips to the Transcon this year will catch me up and then some.

Spend two days in Daggett, CA and you'll be that many or more ahead of the game. The heat? Actually, not that bad.

Nice work Ken...the area officially is spelled Hualapai, yet the RR spells it Walapai...matter of local/RR spelling I guess..

I didn't get down to the Crozier area until very late...after 4pm...I passed several westbounds before getting set up. Saw several choice locations in Hackenberry and Valentine as well.

Here is a westbound at MP 504, between Berry and Walapai...this was my last shot of the day around 7pm, to bookend your first shot of the day.

Yup, MP 504 is where I was, Mike! Interesting that we caught the first and last trains in daylight at that spot.
