SP Black widows in morning sun
Author: SPB

Former SP locomotives SD-9 #5472 and GP-9 #5623 both in black widow paint made a couple of test runs on the Niles Canyon Railway this morning. This photo was taken at Niles on a nice sunny morning. 5472 was originally assigned to Tehachapi freight service when it arrived on the SP in 1956. 5623 was one of the "torpedo boat" geeps that served in SP's San Francisco-San Jose commute service.

Here's 5472 at Taylor Yard in the summer of 1960.

I haven't seen those two together since the days they were at the Oakland Terminal. That's just all kinds of nice!

SP Black widows on passenger excursion in Niles Canyon

Both locomotives have been used on a number of different trains including the annual train of lights. In 2006, the engines doubled headed on an all Harriman consist from Niles to within a mile of Verona Road. Mike Pechner Photo.

What were they testing for? Are they going to be used for trains in the near future?

They were out for a run because the 5472 just had an assembly replaced and the 5623 had an electrical repair.
