Western Railroad Discussion > The Riverside, Ca Branch........The End Has Arrived

Today I was joined by many Rail Fans I have been Lucky to know for over 30 years and a few New Comers, as we watched the UP Riverside local make its final Trip over the Bridge , and over the Freeway

And so today as the Local awaited a call from the Dispatcher, I got the Crew to come down for a Photo , Taken and Posted with THEIR PERMISSION.

How Ironic, today, as many days they waited at the South end of 9ST for a parade of Trains to pass so they could go back to West Colton to tie up , and by the time the Flyover is done , all the Track on 9ST will be History, and Hopfully less waiting on trains

The Riverside branch comes off the Yuma main at Colton, goes down 9th street for a little bit and then heads south over the old PE right-of-way to Riverside. At one time the line used to go from San Bernardino all the way to Corona. This was my favorite local to work when I lived in Colton and worked out of West Colton.

RIP to some very interesting trackage and another victim of progress.

What is the plan to service customers on this line?

As noted elsewhere, the official abandonment application was that BNSF would now switch the customers.

There is some talk, however, that the local UP union would like the UP crews to keep the work.

As new switching on the southern end of the line should begin next week, we'll know the final outcome soon enough, I guess.

Today or Monday the UP RR will finish building a Connecting track to the BNSF San Jacinto Industrial Spur, that will allow the 2 customers in Riverside to be served, the Customers at the Trans Load center will be served by a future connection to the BNSF line in Colton

The line between Colton and Riverside was built by the Southern California Motor road and purchased by the Southern Pacific in 1896. The Pacific Electric used the SP bridge over the Santa Ana River after the 1938 flood damaged it's bridge and from 1943 to 1965 (when the PE was merged into the SP) the PE obtained trackage rights on the SP from the south side of the Santa Ana River to Riverside. In 1943 the PE abandoned their line to Riverside. The PE did not electrify the SP trackage.

The original SP, LA&SL (UP) route between Riverside and Colton was via the SP Riverside Branch.

Isn't this happening to accommodate the anticipated Metrolink commuter service on the the San Jacinto branch from Perris to Riverside (actually an extension of Metrolink 700 trains)?

NO , it happened because of the agreement to build the Flyover in Colton, Ca , that will have the UP RR passing over the BNSF/UP/Metrolink/Amtrak Line

Per the agreement, the UP has to quit running its trains 2 times a week over the I-215 Freeway Bridge, to avoid building a New expensive Bridge when the I-215 is Widened soon and to quit runing on 9thst in Colton which will happen when a New Connecting track is built off the BNSF
