Above the Sunset Route
Author: mococomike

Here are a few shots from the hills the surround UP's Sunset Route near the Shawmut side East of Gila Bend, AZ. Double track is closing in on this last area of single track. When your trackside the lay of the right of way makes you wonder but above the tracks you can see how SP made the best of the geography.

1. WB with old SP right of way to the left.
2. Through through the hills
3. Looking east towards Estrella

1. Looking west to Gila Bend and Yuma.
2. Looking north of the tracks about 2 miles away is the old Butter field Stage Route and De Anza Trail.
3. Straight line for miles to come.

I'll be out there in about 2 1/2 weeks, and I can't wait! Any sign of grading for the double track yet?

I don't know the train symbol, Track speed is 50 here, Detector usually reads trains at 40 to 45. I have never seen a snake out here but I know they around. Lots of deer, mountain goats, foxes, coyotes, lizards and tarantulas though.

South of I-8, the Federal BLM has posted signs to beware of two-legged coyotes. Be careful out there!
