F&W Equipment leaving Ventura County for V&T in Virginia City, NV
Author: WP921

According to various members of CoastDiscuss@groups.io, the following equipment not included in the sale to Sierra Northern has and is departing Fillmore, California:

100 Year Old Steel Heavyweight Coach "Rancho Camulos," formally FW&D/CB&Q;
Fillmore & Western 1059, ALCO S-6;
Wooden PFE Reefer Body.

Based on reports and photos, the "Rancho Camulos" is now in Virginia City.  The F&W 1059 and the PFE Reefer Body were loaded onto low-boy trucks on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 and prepped for departure.  That ALCO S-6 will make quite a site on the highway.  That is an outstanding engine and I am sad to see it leave Ventura County.  I'm sure it will be well taken care of on the V&T.  I suppose they will repaint it.  I am grateful that Sierra Northern purchased the two EMD F7A units and F&W 14, the 2-8-0 Steam Locomotive.

OTOH....
I think its more likely that the SN bought all the equipment that was left,  and is selling some pieces to the V&T.  The SN has a prior relationship with equipment sales to the V&T.   I wouldnt be surprised if the other GP35 is sold off too.  2 Gensets for freight, 2 F units and a consolidation for passenger.....seems like enough...unless they want the GP35 as a hangar queen for movie use.....it could be repainted as needed, without having to repaint/lay up the working locomotives.

Anyone know who handled the trucking of the passenger car to V&T?  Would be interested in getting their contact info.

Thanks!

Why don’t they let Union Pacific handle the transportation of the heavyweight coach?

Most likely UP wanted a lot of money to move it. It would probably also have to be loaded on a flat car.

I wonder if they are using 395 to move north.

Does Union Pacific charge more to move a heavyweight coach than they do for a lightweight coach?

I don't know what UP would charge for either. According to everything I have read it is a load UP does not want so they will most likely price it high enough to get the shipper to use another way or get a lot of money. Plus Virginia City does not have a connection to the rest of the rail world so it would have to be loaded on a truck anyway. Why pay for 3 cranes when you can pay for 2?

I was talking to someone who worked for a fire department in California. They bought a tiller ladder truck from a manufacturer in Florida. They looked into having it shipped by rail but it was cheaper to fly someone out there and drive it across the country. Of course this was back in the 1990s. Since this was before the enclosed, single level vehicle carriers and given the amount of vandalism that happens along the tracks may be it was the insurnce the made it so expensive.

Why doesn’t Union Pacific like transporting heavyweight coaches?

There could be high and wide restrictions. Tunnels, overpasses that would restrict the safe transportation of the load. Could be weight restrictions .total weight of the flatbed car and the heavyweight car on the branch lines.

No live rail goes to Carson or Virginia City. Some trucking required.
