C&O 614-Move
Author: co614

Hello Everyone,

In an attempt to get ahead of the rumor mill I am pleased to announce that C&O 614 will soon move, dead-in-tow, courtesy of NS from Port Clinton,Pa. where she has been stored since 2000, to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Va. for a celebration being planned by the VMT.

Details of the celebration will be posted on the VMT website.

Mechanical preparations are now being done on the 614 in a non-public area of this busy freight railroad and visitors are NOT permitted in this area. Therefore, PLEASE do not attempt to come on the Reading&Northern property. There will be ample opportunities soon as will be announced by the VMT.

Your cooperation is solicited and will be much appreciated.

Thank you, Ross Rowland

Don't forget Ross's post about the Greenbrier Express to be pulled by 614 - thats still moving ahead y'know so I would expect that 614 at Roanoke is just a temporary thing, but man will it be great to 611 - 1218 and 614 Three-a-breast!!!

I thought CSX was not going to allow it to pull that train and they were using former NS C39-8's to pull it

Until they figure out that the 614 probably would be more reliable.

Under a tarp on private property, it's hard to say she
will be missed here in PA, but...

Looks like she found a (hopefully) temporary home where
she can be displayed for all to see. And... she's closer
to Ross's new venture (that can't be bad).

Thanks for the heads up and best wishes towards #614 on
what lies down the track.

/Mitch

Any chance she will have returned to this appearance, which IMHO is an improvement over the C&O look? Taken at the B&O museum, 1995.

You know, I used to think the centered headlight was better looking too. I can't imagine 614 any other way than with a low headlight now. You may know that the first group of Greenbrier's on the C&O did have the centered headlight.

Here is a pic of 614 from June 2008 in Port Clinton PA. Inside the roundhouse was Reading 2102. It was too bad I thought that 614 could not have been put in the roundhouse also.

Can't imagine 614 looking any other way than its C&O appearance. Just my thoughts.

The 614 will remain in traditional C&O garb for the near term, with the headlight in the lower traditional C&O position.

I hope that permanent removal of the ditch lights is the first order of business.

This was last August. Got an invite to look inside the toybox.

Anybody know why railfans need to break in and steal stuff off these locos? Couple trys have been made. They get a little upset seeing railfans out back.

This is very exciting. Living in Virginia, I'll definitely visit 614 at the VMT. I'd also be interested in information on the move to see it rolling.

Ugh - I think I'm gonna be sick. The very first C&O Greenbriers (1935) did actually look good with the raised headlight - but there were no flying pumps and the front end was free of clutter. The J3a with her cover over the pumps looks better with the lowered, correct headlight position. Would you raise the headlight on the N&W 1218? (they'lll be after you with pitchforks if someone did).

I like the C&O modern steam look with the lowered headlight - it is distictive. 614 looks like too many other locomotives with the raised headlight, kinda like bottle blonde hair girls. I hope she retains her natural beauty and doesn't change her face one bit (although the Greenbrier Express Paint scheme will look nice on her!).

Two of my favorite engines, Hope to see the 614 under steam in the near future and the same for the 2102. Don`t get me wrong I like the 425 but nothing better than a T-1. Just don`t paint it blue....

As to the great headlight debate, it will stay in the lower traditional C&O position. End of subject.

As to the particulars of the dead-in-tow move all I can share is that it will be sometime in early December. If NS wants to make the operating details public ( I highly doubt it??) they will do so.

Best wishes to all for a peaceful Thanksgiving.
