New schnabel car heading to Charleston in July
Author: tomd

Kasgro, in New Castle, PA, has been building a new schnabel car for Westinghouse. This car is to be a twin of the CEBX 800, 36 axles. For more on the CEBX 800 see my webpage on it ( http://southern.railfan.net/schnabel/cars/cebx800/cebx800.html ).

It will be heading to Charleston in July. There are two nuclear power plants under construction in South Carolina and Georgia. Units 3 and 4 are being added to the Volgle plant in Georgia (construction photos http://www.southerncompany.com/nuclearenergy/photos.aspx ), and two new units at the Summer plant. This schanbel car will be used to move the reactors and steam generators from the port of Charleston (my guess) to the plants.

Here is a link to a video that show the car at Kasgro.

Once those loads get to the plants, they have to be lifted into place.

For those of us who also like cranes, two of the largest ones in the world is being constructed, one at each plant, by Bigge. The AFRD 125D has been designed to lift 7,500 tons and 1,500 tons at 440 foot radius (more info http://www.bigge.com/heavy-lift-and-transportation/super-cranes.html) This beast is huge, the base/counterweight is a very large concrete slab, then entire circular base.

Here are a couple of shots from the Vogle plant web site

Hi Tom, Sure enjoyed the pictures & video about the new big schnable car being built at Kasgro. It sounds like it is
a little bit bitter but similar in appearance to the CEBX 800. I am a big fan of these really big cars and I hope
plenty of people will provide details, etc. when the car is in operation. Many thanks again for the first pictures
I have seen of this new car.
Thanks,
Mike Shirmer

I realize it's not yet July but does anyone have any tentative dates for the move and routing?

There are photos of it with a CSX locomotive coupled to the car.
