Spring is near, won't be needing this - UP Jet Snow Bl
Author: Mgoldman

Spotted this guy at the UP Depot in Rochelle, IL on Saturday the 26th.
I assume it is in fact a Jet Powered Snow Blower, right?

If so, is this a local unit based here or visiting?

/Mitch

You don't want to get near one of those things when they're operating!! Noisy and HOT HOT HOT!! Does more melting of the snow than blowing, but interesting to watch...

I'm sure there is a dedicated front end, but, like a (modern) locomotive it could operate either way judging by these videos.......

Looks to be a good way to clear switches, or one of the fastest ways to burn a bunch of JP (jet fuel is nothing more than glorified diesel) short of just igniting the tank.

MRL has one similar to this one, which I saw in operation only once. It was very impressive!

Thanks for sharing and also Southern3205 for the youtube video links. In the first one, when it revved up,  it was almost like it was getting ready to lift off from an airport runway! LOL

Now check out this truck mounted one on CPR that melts off built up snow and ice on a snowplow!

I Know I am replying to an old post, but I just can't help.

I heard that some fellows at the Los Angeles Live Steamers did something like this using battery-powered leaf blowers on flatcars for propulsion, much to the horror of the more senior club members!  Speeds were impressive, braking, not so much!

Where is spring near? The latest forecast for the Philadelphia area this morning says to expect snow early Monday morning with some two to three inches accumulation. Heard they are canceling spring and summer this year and we are going right back to winter. Ho hum!

When the airline jet engine times out with their limit of hours, they are sold to the railroads for this service. It is not too serious a thing when one of the snow jet engines lose a blade and ends life down a switch lead. Just get replaced with another air line rejected engine. They are loud, and them make some ballast fly.

If we put the right kind of nozzle on that thing, no loco would be needed to haul it around. But the operator might need a 0/0 ejection seat and parachute. :-)

The PRR/PC used one of these jet blowers at their 59th Street Yard in Chicago.
I saw it often in action during winter evenings in the 70's from 75th Street Tower,
and it was quite a sight; lots of flames.
