Canadian Railroads > Chapter 2 - Miserable Alberta Monday per arwyeDate: 02/19/19 11:59 Chapter 2 - Miserable Alberta Monday per arwye Author: Parkcar In keeping with Richard's theme, I thought I'd dig this shot out from the archives, from days long past. On a bitterly cold -41c January 1990 day, I had to be in Edson for an afternoon business meeting. After driving over the east-end overpass at Edson and seeing the the EB trains with the their consist disappearing in the ice-fog and lined up idling as if to say it's too danged cold to go further, I decided it was worth the trek to park and risk the Yellowhead highway traffic for this shot. Thankfully not a lot of traffic this very frigid morning, but still, there wasn't a lot of room between the driving lane and the guardrail either. The smell of poorly burned diesel fuel from the units lingered in the air and the motors have cooled sufficiently that grey exhaust is puking out, a sign of poor combustion and a cold engine. I will never forget hiding the camera in my parka, taking off gloves momentarily for the shots and braving the ugly cold windchill at those temps for this shot.....in hindsight, it was a dangerous situation that I really shouldn't have risked, but....

Also liking the Miserable Weather theme. Makes me kinda embarrassed for some of my blue sky photos, maybe we should start a Wimpy Wedensday topic? Forgetting the Hamburger chain by that name of course. Date: 02/19/19 14:59 Re: Chapter 2 - Miserable Alberta Monday per arwye Author: arwye Very nice work! I'll see if I can up the ante' this coming Monday:)- RY

After 50 years of railfanning/photography, I can unoquivocally say this group of shot is the coldest in which I have ever taken. When I decided to supplement RY's photos on this theme, this one immediately came to mind, even though it is almost 30 years ago. Incidentally, I have RY to 'blame' for personally getting me in to this hobby. 8-) Cheers....and brrrrrrr...... |
