Western Railroad Discussion > Black Hills CentralDate: 06/02/13 06:40 Black Hills Central Author: Winks Headed to Custer, SD, this July. Any comments on the Black Hills Central train as I plan to ride it. I'm guessing to do round trip from Hill City.
Thanks for any inputs. Date: 06/02/13 09:10 Re: Black Hills Central Author: AZSteve Morning Jim.
We did this one a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Wish we had more time to see all the sights around there. Will definitely go back again. It is reasonably priced and goes slow. A lot of interesting history along the way. We did the round trip. Enjoy. Steve... Date: 06/02/13 11:28 Re: Black Hills Central Author: blackhillshogger It's up and running. There are at least 3 trips a day. Plan to also visit the South Dakota RR Museum on the property. PM me if you want more info. I live at Custer 13 miles south.

The line roughly follows a county road and there are good photos locations to be had without too much trouble. Onboard photos are more difficult since you must stay seated - there is limited clearance at points, I can understand why they insist on this.

Date: 06/02/13 16:34 Re: Black Hills Central Author: SD45X I just posted some shots on the steam board. Mornings best for pictures of the train to Keystone if they run the engine forward. Easy chase. Lots of curves and crossings. Run around train at Keystone. Afternoon better here as they run the tank engine backward over and forward back.
I only saw one run when we went. Showed two on the schedule but they dropped the fire? and parked it. Little early in the season might be the reason. If the engine is facing east, chase in the morning, facing west chase afternoon. Short section after they climb the first hill you will be away from the tracks. |
