Named for the Marias River, which in turn was named by Captain Meriwether Lewis for Maria Wood.

While we're at it, what's the accepted pronunciation of 'Havre'.

I've thought it would be similar to the town in France, which it's said to be named after. Recently was told the locals pronounce it like the common name 'Harvey'.

Maria Pass is easy. Difficult to me was to say Cajon and Tehachapi. I got the right pronunciation with locals when I visit the locations in 2013.

I've heard it jokingly referred to as Harvey Montana as if it was a cowboy guy of some sort.

The pronunciation goes with the joke about the place:

Jim Hill rode his business car to the end of the line to see how construction was progressing. At the end of track, around MP 430, he got off, looked around and asked the construction foreman where exactly they were. The foreman told him that the place didn't have a name.

Jim Hill said, Really? Well, you can have 'er. I'm going back to St.Paul.

Thanks guys. The source was a Retired CP/SOO Conductor. I suspected it was a very local pronunciation, much the same way that Dunsmuir is pronounced as 'Dodge'.

But now I have to explain to the other Retired Conductor that was in the conversation.
That might be more difficult.

Have-her is the pronounced Havre.

For that reason, I was always surprised that it wasn't pronounced "Maria's".

Sometimes, that sort of thing just happens for no apparent reason. The siding east of Pasco (WA - BN) is Mesa...Mee-sa.
