A Kismet, CA Head-on Collision Survivor
Author: MrMRL

Now part of the "Surge Fleet", BNSF 4479 (C44-9W) looks just fine in the morning light of August 18, 2020. For the RR historians out there, BNSF 4479 was the leader of one of the two trains from June 14, 2006 Kismet, CA head-on collision. A relatively new RR technology 14 years ago, the now famous forward-facing cab video of the collision was recorded from the 4479 as it was preparing to take the siding around a Southbound that overshot a stop signal. Amazingly no one was killed as a result of the accident.

The hulk was dragged back to the Topeka shops, cabless and on dummy donor trucks. The 4479 was found to have a straight frame, pieced back together, repainted H3 and returned to full service in 2007.

What happened to the BNSF 4934 that was the leader in the 2013 oil train derailment at Casselton, ND?
Was it rebuilt or scrapped?
Is 4934 now a Gevo?
