Western Railroad Discussion > Any Caltrain F40's to be Preserved?Date: 09/25/24 09:16 Any Caltrain F40's to be Preserved? Author: NJW_Rails With Caltrain electrification infrastructure and trainsets fully in effect and now all of the JPBX F40's permanently sidelined, what does the future hold for those units? Are Niles Canyon Railway/Pacific Locomotive Association or California State Railroad Museum/Sacramento Southern options? Or, is the California Air Resources Board forcing them to be scrapped or shipped out of state if their careers were to continue?

If they aren't already. Date: 09/25/24 10:25 Re: Any Caltrain F40's to be Preserved? Author: webmaster You can buy a 250,000 pound rolling paper weight if you really want one. Moving it will certainly be costly.

Author: broken_link Three of the F40PH-2C units, 920, 921, and 922, are to be retained. All 6 MP36PH-3C locomotives are also to be retained. I think it's interesting that they are still using at least one of the locomotives slated for retirement on the Gilroy service per milepost20's post yesterday: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,5922701

I bet Caltrain is just going to run the doomed diesels hard and put them away wet until they hit some maintenance issue or milestone that will make it worthwhile to relegate them to the deadline.

Date: 09/25/24 22:06 Re: Any Caltrain F40's to be Preserved? Author: andrewamtrak I believe at least 2 museums inquired and were promptly told to go pound sand.

Author: andrewamtrak They want running examples, not paperweights that just take up space. Have enough of that as it is

Apparently some museums have different concepts of preserving history than others. Date: 09/27/24 07:50 Re: Any Caltrain F40's to be Preserved? Author: ChrisCampi DutchDragon Wrote:

Its not that so much as to many projects vs time and resources problem. Date: 10/12/24 10:09 Re: Any Caltrain F40's to be Preserved? Author: JPBMW500 I am a member at the Southern California Railway Museum, me amongst other people in this organization are entering the race in aquisition of one of these machines, we're trying to go after specifically one of the -2 Screamers (902,903,907,914) for use in the museum excursions. Unfortunately since a "bite" has to be taken out of the engine due to CARBs Tier 4 Grant, the engine only can be operated in MU operation via an operating locomotive from our vast collection. Right now we plan to get this F40 in along with Coaster 2105 and ATSF 5704 along with a few other coach cars i heard of once the perris connection project is also complete. If any of you guys would like to help us out on this journey, we have a fundraiser already up! Thank you and long live the F40s

Sierra Madre CA Gotta love people who place blame on a government agency when another party enters into a contract with the government agency and has to abide by the conditions of the contract. |
