Whoa!  Great stuff and any time you get shortline operations with units in matching paint it's a bonus.  Not much coverage of this operation so far and I must add kudos to your work with the bird.

Thanks for getting some pictures of this railroad! It hasn't been photographed much since the days of the Rio Grande Scenic. By all accounts, the line seems to slowly but surely bouncing back after the previous owner went bankrupt.

The first shot shows the train coming down the hill through Natural Cut.  The rock outcropping is a natural formation.  The Rio Grande managed to stick the railroad through a gap in the rock here.  On the uphill side there is evidence that the cut was widened a bit during construction in 1899.  The downhill portion is as God created it.

It takes a bit of imagination, but below the train in pics 1 and 2 is the grade of the Bald Mountain RR, a 3' gauge coal hauling road that served a mine on the other side of the valley.  While the D&RG steadilly climbed a 3% grade, the Bald Mountain stayed pretty much level below the Grande, to a point where they crossed the narrow canyon a mile or so uphill from where the first shot is taken.

The third shot is at the location of a long gone siding called "Francisco", about a 1/2 mile before the 3% grade begins to level out.
