The word ‘surprise’ is a bit be misleading here. On my hometown KP I hardly ever just set out to do a chase. It’s usually a text message tip, or finding a train passing through town while out running errands that gets me up & running. Either way, even with the scant traffic the KP offers nowadays I still get to practice this hobby pretty often. And while I’m recording future history I can relive past chases and/or single shots on these very same tracks back in the 70s & 80s. For me, the sense of history is what this hobby is all about... :^)

I discovered a westbound ‘proceed’ indication at 5th St, so...
1. & 2. UP 4829 is hauling train TPSI around the curve behind Midwest Concrete Materials in the SE corner in Manhattan, KS. If this shot looks familiar: ( Oops, he should have ducked! ).

3. Still in downtown Manhattan we’re looking north up Juliette Avenue (7th Street).

4. Farmer John’s been busy at the Stagg Hill Golf Course crossing in the Eureka Lake area of Manhattan. The course is just out of frame to the right

5. Now at the 56th St overpass east of Ogden KS.

6. The TPSI at the VFW crossing at the bottom end of Washington St in Junction City, KS.

7. Alongside of Old hwy 40 just east of Chapman, KS.

8. Still alongside of Old 40 about 2 miles west of Chapman.

Arriving in Abilene I always try to buzz the BNSF yard to see what might be sitting around. And I knew the KP had a second westbound train on the way...

9. BNSF 2519 is poking its nose out of the west end of Abilene (KS) Yard.

10. I still had plenty of time to set up for UP 2722 on a unit tanker just west of the old UP depot in Abilene.

11. Then it got complicated. An eastbound unit grainer was taking the siding at Ike, KS, But...

12. ...the 2722 stopped just short of the detector at Eden Rd in the Sand Spring area west of Abilene. It was 4:45 PM. I would be out of good daylight very soon. So I broke off from the chase here...
