Fallen Flag Power Never Leaves Far From Home
Author: fjc

It's interesting that lately the power on the LRQ 30 & 50 (Mission Bay and Broadway Local) has been either patched or repainted SP/SSW or DRGW power in recent weeks. Last week's LRQ 30 (Mission Bay) was sporting a trio of former SP/SSW SD40T-2's and one in a SD45T-2 carbody stenciled as a 40T-2. Replacing this powerset was a now common SD70M and a pair of SD40-2's (UP 4292, 3144 & 3524 - http://www.railsaroundthebay.net/miscellaneous/092705/163_6356a.jpg), within a few days this powerset was replaced with the current one we have now as seen in these photos.

UP 2907, 2833 & 8592 (Former DRGW).

For kicks here's a series of photos, reminds me of the days before the UP merger when you'd always see some sort of large power on the Mission Bay, wasn't uncommon for a SD40, 45, 45T-2, 40T-2 coupled with a SD9 to be the power of choice. And now that the Broadway Local is calling South San Francisco home, you have the four axle variety of power for this job, which is also doubles as power for the South City switcher in the morning during the weekdays.

For the Broadway/South City is the UP 1453 & 1510.

Enjoy the photos,

Frank

Flew past that on the freeway the other day. I'm glad you recorded that. I'll have to get down there again soon...

2907 is not former DRGW as it is a snoot nose.

Hmmm, I guess Kevin I wrote this in a foreign language or something because the only one I refered to as former DRGW with the () after it was the 8592. So I guess that isn't clear enough, so lets try it again since your the only one it seems that didn't understand my writing.

UP 2907

UP 2833

&

UP 8592 (Former DRGW)

Better?

Oh ya, I know my engines well enough too to know that the 2907 isn't a former DRGW engine, hell that's a no brainer!

Hey Frank, when were you out shooting these? I stopped by SSF yesterday (9/28) in the mid afternoon and the lighting and lineup looked similar so I'm wondering if I may have just missed you.

Dave, was in rules class Mon-Wed and I stopped by after class on Tuesday. I had to have an excuse to go ride the Harley, I just got the fender in on last Friday and it's complete now. Like nothing ever happened, and more add on parts than before ;-)

Frank, it does look better with the fender. When I saw it and you a couple of weeks ago, it did look incomplete.

Yup, four months in the making, thanks to some idiot in a pick-up and his careless driving. But things happen for a reason, luckily all that I had happen to me was a bruised shoulder and my pride and joy banged up a bit.

The three six-axle units each have issues that are probably not repairable at South City. They plan on swapping them out once replacements become available.

That would explain that quick turnaround on the last set that lasted only a few days, does it look like six axle power is here to stay on "The Bay"? Or, has this just become a short term fluke that will disappear one day? Seems to be the aggregate business isn't letting up much, also the dirty dirt seems to be alive and well provided construction keeps up the way it is. In addition with the dirty dirt, I would imagine the Hunters Point site will generate alot of dirt once the actual rebuilding of the land starts and when the work trains on the PCS start again I can picture the materials being interchanged right at SSF instead of Newhall.
