UP4762 Question
Author: uprail

I have been out of touch for awhile however I have a question about the numbering of this point locomotive. I thought UP SD70M's had numbers reserved from 4000 to 4999 to take care of the 1000 units ordered. Also, what type of locomotive is this? Thanks in advance.

There's still some 4000s out there not SD70Ms, like the t-motor caught over here in Chester, South Carolina recently. I think it was 4821, larger than 105K, else I'd post.

uprail,
That is a SD40-2 in a SD45 body.Replaced the 3600 hp 20 cylinder engine with a 16 cylinder, 3000 hp unit. It is a ex-cn5196 according to Don Stracks locomotive directory. Has not been renumbered yet to a different number to make room for the SD70's. I have seen 4735, I think is the number, in Salina, KS. lately. Hope this helps. upkpfan

WOW.....That's cool to see in the lead. Here in Illinois, only ATC-equipped units can lead. Thanks for posting the picture.

UP 4762 is a former CN SD-40 it is not a SD-45 body. The BNSF has a bunch of former Canadian SD-40 re-builds also but those still have the snow shields behind the cab and have headlights that look like GP-9 headlights. The UP rebuilds have the fuel filler between split air tanks. It looks like a smal air tank then the filler then a longer section of the air tank.Looks like you caught the 4762 along with up2232,7519,3249,& 3837 on the MWCPC-08 on NOV.08.
